Impact Texas Drivers (ITD) Program: Free Course and Texas DPS Requirement
The Impact Texas Drivers (ITD) Program is a free, state-required online course for anyone applying for a Texas driver license. Created by the Texas Department of Public Safety, this two-hour video course teaches the dangers of distracted and impaired driving through real-life stories and safety lessons. Many applicants see ITD listed on the Texas DPS checklist because it is one of the final steps before taking the driving skills test. After completing the course, students receive a certificate valid for 90 days, which must be presented during the road test appointment. Since the certificate expires quickly, most students complete ITD close to their scheduled test date. The course is completely online, easy to access, and designed to help drivers understand the responsibility of being behind the wheel. Whether you are a teen, first-time adult driver, or new Texas resident, this program helps prepare you for safe driving while meeting Texas licensing requirements.
Texas offers three versions of the ITD course based on age. Teen drivers under 18 must complete Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) before taking their driving test. Drivers ages 18 to 24 need Impact Texas Young Drivers (ITYD), usually along with the six-hour adult driver education course. Adults age 25 and older applying for their first Texas license or transferring from another state may need Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD). Each version covers similar safety topics but is tailored to the driver’s age group and lifestyle. The course takes a full two hours, and users cannot skip or fast-forward the videos. Attention checks appear during the session to confirm the student is actively watching. This ensures every applicant completes the full program and understands the serious risks of distracted driving on Texas roads.
To take the course, visit the official ITD website and create a free account using your legal name exactly as it appears on your documents. Once finished, download and print your certificate immediately. Bring the printed certificate to your Texas DPS driving test appointment, and keep a digital copy as backup. If your test is rescheduled beyond 90 days, you must retake the course. Completing ITD on time can prevent delays and wasted DPS visits. This course is one of the easiest but most important requirements for earning a Texas driver license. Pair it with driver education, supervised practice, and proper scheduling to stay fully prepared.
